A salad is a light, leafy vegetable dish often served with a sauce or dressing but the category also includes dishes made of ingredients like fruits, grains, meats, seafood, and sweets. A soup or salad is typically served at the same point in a meal and is interchangeable with one or the other food item. Either can also serve as a light meal.
