Appetizer or Snack

The appetizer is the first course of a meal traditionally known as the hors d’oeuvre. The appetizer consists of food items served before the main courses of a meal. If there is an extended period between when guests arrive and when the meal is eaten, appetizers can be used to sustain guests during the wait, Hors d’oeuvres are sometimes served with no meal afterward. This is the case with many reception and cocktail party events. So in that way an appetizer is little more than a snack. Appetizers may also be served as a part of the main course or they may be served before sitting at the table.
